Medieval "undershoes"

An illustration, from a Book of Hours, of a winter scene in Bruges from approximately the year 1500.

From the always-delightful blog of Erik Kwakkel.

  1. They were called "Pattens" and ranged from flat hinged pieces of wood that helped keep the wet off the soles of your shoes and creeping in, to the taller overshoe in the picture that eventually became the Italian Chopine that was used to keep your feet and shoes out of the dung and waste in the streets. The things you learn in the SCA.
