Death by immersion

The sheep had drowned while trying to cross a small canal in the meadow-swamp 'Tøndermasken' in southern Jylland in Denmark. Birds had eaten every part above the surface and everything under was left totally untouched.

  3. Is there any reason why the part under the water still seems so well preserved? Is the pond frozen or particularly alkaline?

    1. It's frozen - perhaps solid. Only the part above the ice was accessible to the scavengers.

  4. Why couldn't it get out? This is such a sad photo.

    1. Sheep are not great swimmers, nor are they particularly bright. It looks like the bank may have been too steep to easily get out, and this one could only doggy-paddle for so long.
