Lake-effect snow

We're experiencing an aberrantly warm and dry early winter here in Wisconsin.  Paradoxically, warm periods in early winter can be associated with immense snowstorms dumping several feet of snow at a time when prevailing winds blow across large fetches of open water such as the great lakes.  The photo above (via On Weather) shows the effect nicely.
