Residua of a winter flood


This is what one sees up north when there is a flood in the winter during freezing weather, then the water subsides before temperatures warm up. This example (source unknown) is extreme, but you can see the same phenomenon on the edges of woodland meltwater ponds.

  3. I intended it as the plural, because of the multiple items. It depends on whether one views it as "the ice is..." or "the pieces of ice are..."
