Junior High Shop class, 1921

Washington, D.C., circa 1921. "Junior high school shop." Harris & Ewing Collection glass negative.

This photo brings back pleasant memories. When I was in junior high school, shop class was mandatory. We learned to use a band saw without breaking the blade, a jigsaw, and best of all a lathe. I never made anything more complicated than a bookcase and a lamp, but it was an excellent learning experience of practical knowledge. I wonder whether such skills are still taught in non-vocational skills, and if not what is deemed more important...
