Boxed water

I thought this was an "Onion" joke, but it's real. The Boxed Water company is marketing water in milk cartons. Why is this better for the environment? Because it's not packaged in plastic.

The trees used to make our box come from certified, well managed forests. These forests remain healthy and stable through ongoing replanting while removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

What type of water is Boxed Water?

Boxed Water is carbon-filtered, purified water from Minnesota and it tastes like...water - simple and refreshing.

I'll defer any commentary...

  1. It's a great idea. I'm so sick of seeing plastic water bottles in thousands of places you shouldn't see empty plastic water bottles. The landfills are choking with them as well. Good riddance to the plastic water bottle.

  2. I suppose using cardboard boxes for water is better than using plastic bottles: the same way a broken leg is better than a broken back.

In the vast majority of situations, using any sort of container for water is worse than pointless. With the availability of cheap and effective filters (like pitcher filters and the like), there's no need to "import" water. And regardless of whether you ship plastic or cardboard containers, you still have to ship them.

In those relatively infrequent cases where shipping water is necessary, it makes much more sense to use larger, recyclable/reusable containers and re-usable drinking vessels.

  3. 1) At least its local.

    2) Tree farms (like the kinds all over MN) actually do soak up a crap load of carbon and much more than older forests.

On principle though I just avoid bottled/boxed water in general. Almost everywhere in the US tap water is just as good and if its not get a filter. Even a nice under the sink reverse osmosis filter only sets you back ~$130 and makes 30-50 gallons per day.

The only stuff that really kills me is bottled water from more than 100mi away. That is just silly.

  4. Not only is water coming in boxes, but wine is too!

  5. I have a stainless waterbottle if I want to take water with me. Other than that, I drink tap water. We have safe, good-tasting water. Using bottled OR boxed water is wasteful and unnecessary.

  6. Chopping down trees for packaging is just as bad as plastic. Yes, I know plastic is worse but we need trees to breathe! It does sound like something that would be from the Onion! lol
